YouTube can be used in the classroom to enhance your current curriculum by:

Finding video of experiences you couldn't replicate in the classroom
Sharing projects with a large audience, including other classrooms or parents/family
Quickly creating video newsletters for parents or students
Embed videos to existing websites

Alternatives to being on YouTube:

TeacherTube: The "education version" of YouTube.
Google Video: Not "geared toward" education like TeacherTube, but one of a number of other video hosting sites.
Vixy: online multi-platform flash video converter. They also have a desktop application version. Currently in beta form.
Tube TV (download for Macs 10.4+): Tube TV allows you to download movies from YouTube or TeacherTube to your computer in a video format.
YouTube Downloader
Embed videos into existing websites: There is still a link to whichever video hosting site you use (i.e., YouTube, TeacherTube, etc.), but you will not automatically be taken to the hosting website. Examples: school tour, the CNN bus

4th graders are currently compiling information to be used in a website dedicated to their Portal Schoolhouse field trip.
They have used TeacherTube to store their videos.

School Documentaries

Students created documentaries about their schools. Those videos were uploaded to YouTube and the location of the school was added to the video, which allowed them to be viewed in Google Earth.
